The most difficult task of making rail and stile doors for kitchen cabinets or furniture is making the cope cut in the ends of the rail. This is difficult because the workpiece is narrow and doesn’t have enough surface area to reference off of the router table fence. Also, the cope cut is made across the end grain of the workpiece and is prone to blowout as the workpiece passes the router bit. The Infinity Cutting Tools Pro Coping Sled COP-101 solves all of these problems and a few more that you may experience when building any form of frame and panel, glass panel, interior and exterior door, or many other joinery cuts at the router table or spindle shaper.
The Infinity Professional Coping Sled is made of anodized and precision CNC-machined aluminum, making it extremely accurate and almost indestructible. It will hold up to years of use even in the most demanding of cabinet shops.
The clamps on the Infinity Professional Coping Sled are the key to its versatility. While the Infinity COP-100 Coping Sled uses standard toggle clamps to secure the work piece, the Professional Coping Sled uses 3 auto-adjusting toggle clamps that have been machined specifically to fit the sled. These clamps allow easy clamping of material ranging in thickness from 3/4″-thick all the way up to 2″ without the need to make adjustments to the clamp — perfect for any job from a cabinet door to a full-size exterior door. The auto-adjust clamps also allow the tension to be set anywhere between 25lb and 250lb of clamping force regardless of the thickness of the workpiece being clamped. There’s no need to fiddle with the clamp if you are working with different thicknesses of material or working with softer species of wood that are prone to pressure marks.
The clamp closest to the router bit is canted specifically to allow a backer block to be clamped in place to help eliminate blowout as the router bit or shaper cutter exits the workpiece.
The visor on the Pro Coping Sled is made of 3/8″-thick polycarbonate (Lexan) and is mounted 3″ above the table surface. The added heft of the visor insures that it will not unintentionally slip into the T-track slots often found on router table and shaper fences. While the visor provides a clear view of the cut being made and excellent protection from flying debris, the visor’s main purpose is to reference off of the fence and ensure an accurate, snipe-free cut on the ends of narrow workpieces.
The visor allows up to a 3/4″ depth of cut, perfect for both cabinet doors and interior and exterior doors alike. In the event that a greater depth of cut is required the Pro Coping Sled has two sets of mounting holes perfectly spaced to mount an Infinity Tools Miter Bar COP-MB1.
The Miter bar allows the sled to reference from the miter track in the router table or shaper table instead of the fence. This is perfect when a deep cut needs to be made such as for an extended tenon on an exterior door. The two mounting locations allow the centerline of the miter bar to be mounted 3″ or 4.5″ from the edge of the coping sled, allowing the user to adjust the amount of clearance from the sled to the router bit or shaper cutter.
Because of the hefty aluminum construction of the sled — a whopping 7.5 pounds — the resulting cuts are smoother than those made with a lighter weight sled or no sled at all. This means that when using the Infinity Cutting Tools Professional Coping Sled COP-101 your joinery will be more accurate which results in gap-free-joinery.
